Chapter 15 - THE MEETING AT VANTAGE

Charles confessed to disabling the access log.

But not for the reason I expected.

"Olivia asked me to."

Detective Reed stared at him.

"Why?"

Charles's attorney sat beside him now.

Every sentence came carefully.

Olivia had arranged the Vantage meeting herself.

She told Charles she wanted Vanessa there.

Her plan was to bluff.

She claimed she had already duplicated all evidence and delivered it to investigators.

That wasn't true.

She hoped Vanessa would panic and reveal where the stolen money went.

It worked partly.

Vanessa admitted she had moved money.

She also claimed Charles had taken more than she had.

Then Olivia made her mistake.

She revealed the location of the original records.

"Not Box 417," Charles said. "The burgundy case."

The same case Vanessa had taken from Olivia's room.

Olivia told Vanessa it contained enough evidence to ruin them both.

Charles disabled the door log because Olivia threatened to expose him immediately unless he let her leave without creating a formal record of the meeting.

"Why would she care about the record?"

"She didn't want Arthur's father learning about her plan before she went federal."

Reed asked the question I needed answered.

"Did Vanessa leave with Olivia?"

Charles shook his head.

"I don't know. I left through the parking garage first."

"Convenient."

"It's true."

The building's garage had no surviving records.

But Charles gave us something useful.

Vanessa had driven a silver Mercedes sedan at the time.

The original crash investigator had noted silver paint transfer on Olivia's rear bumper.

It had been dismissed as older damage because Olivia had mentioned a parking scrape weeks earlier.

Reed requested the archived evidence photographs.

The paint transfer sat exactly where a trailing vehicle might contact Olivia's car.

Not proof.

But newly relevant.

Then my phone buzzed.

Margaret Sloan.

The board's independent audit had found $2.6 million of the missing Vantage money.

It had been routed into accounts controlled by Charles.

Another $1.3 million had moved through Vanessa-linked entities.

About $400,000 remained untraced.

Vanessa was not merely Charles's victim or collector.

She was financially invested.

But the audit found something worse.

One month before Olivia's death, Vanessa purchased a one-million-dollar umbrella liability policy for Vantage's executive contractors.

The listed beneficiary for certain indemnity payments was a trust.

Carter Family Recovery Trust.

I had never heard of it.

Neither had Nathan.

The trustee was Charles Welles.

The contingent beneficiary was Vanessa Hale.

They had built financial structures around my family before Olivia died.

I stood so fast my chair scraped backward.

Then Reed received a message.

Vanessa's abandoned car had been found at a commuter station.

Inside was Olivia's burgundy document case.

Empty.

Except for one thing.

A photograph of Ethan leaving school.
