Chapter 17 - THE SISTER IN THE FILES

Melissa Grant wasn't merely Vanessa's sister.
She was the person who had created most of the paperwork.
The relationship had been concealed because Melissa used her married name professionally.
I had met her dozens of times.
She had prepared my estate packets.
She had coordinated notarizations.
She had emailed me reminders.
I had never known she and Vanessa shared a mother.
Rachel found the disclosure buried in an old conflict-check file Charles's firm should have flagged years earlier.
It had been marked "resolved."
By Melissa.
When Reed questioned her, she arrived with counsel and denied participating in theft.
Then the forensic audit tied her workstation to draft shell-company documents for Vantage affiliates.
Her defense changed.
She said Charles directed everything.
Charles said Melissa acted for Vanessa.
Vanessa said nothing.
The triangle began breaking apart.
Melissa eventually admitted she had helped create the forged estate amendment.
"Vanessa told me Arthur had agreed to it but was refusing to sign because he was angry."
Rachel looked at her.
"And you forged his signature?"
"No."
"Then who did?"
Melissa hesitated.
"I prepared the signature block. Vanessa brought it back signed."
Nathan's witness signature had also appeared afterward.
Melissa claimed she assumed both were genuine.
I didn't believe that.
But proving knowledge mattered more than anger.
Then Reed asked about Olivia.
Melissa's composure cracked.
She admitted Olivia had confronted her four days before the crash.
Olivia knew Melissa and Vanessa were sisters.
She threatened to tell me.
"What did you do?" I asked.
Melissa looked at the table.
"I called Vanessa."
Nothing more.
No murder confession.
No cinematic collapse.
Just one phone call that connected another old clue.
Olivia's notebook entry:
V. threatened M. again.
We had assumed M meant someone Vanessa threatened.
It meant Melissa.
Vanessa had been threatening her own sister.
"With what?" Reed asked.
Melissa finally answered.
"Prison."
Vanessa kept copies of documents showing Melissa's involvement.
If Melissa stopped cooperating, Vanessa would make her look like the architect.
The pattern was consistent.
Nathan.
Charles.
Melissa.
Vanessa kept everyone close by making sure each person had something to lose.
But Melissa gave us the missing clue about the brass key.
She had seen it before.
Olivia showed it to her during their confrontation.
"She said, 'You tell Vanessa she can search every room in my house after I'm dead. She'll still need this.'"
My chest tightened.
Olivia expected Vanessa to search the house.
Melissa continued.
"Vanessa became obsessed with finding that key after Olivia died."
"Why?"
"Because she thought Box 417 held the original ledger."
It didn't.
The box held copies.
"So where was the original?"
Melissa whispered, "Olivia never told me."
Then I remembered the silver necklace inside Box 417.
Olivia never stored sentimental objects with business files without reason.
I turned the necklace over.
Inside the clasp was a tiny engraved number.
Not a date.

A storage-unit number.
📖 Olivia had used Box 417 as a map, not a vault, and Storage 4621 contained the evidence Vanessa had spent sixteen months trying to find. 👇
