Chapter 20 - SILVER PAINT

The salvage yard had dismantled the Mercedes fourteen months ago.

At first, that sounded like the end.

Then the owner checked inventory.

The rear quarter panel had been sold.

The engine had been recycled.

The driver's door was gone.

But the front bumper reinforcement remained in a warehouse because its mounting bracket was bent.

Reed sent it to the state lab.

Three days later, preliminary results came back.

Embedded in a damaged section was paint.

Dark blue metallic.

Olivia's SUV had been dark blue metallic.

The layer chemistry and manufacturer formulation were consistent with her exact model and production year.

Again, not unique enough to stand alone.

But the damage height aligned with Olivia's rear bumper.

The vehicles had very likely contacted.

I sat across from Reed.

"Can you arrest her?"

"Not on that alone."

I hated the answer because it was responsible.

He explained what prosecutors would need.

Proof Vanessa was driving.

Evidence of intent or criminal recklessness.

A reliable reconstruction.

The case had moved from rumor to serious evidence, but serious evidence still required proof.

Then the forensic review of Olivia's laptop produced a new message.

At 8:17 p.m., Olivia texted Thomas Bennett.

Leaving now. She's following me.

The message had never delivered because Olivia's phone briefly lost service.

It remained stored as unsent data.

"She's" was not a name.

But combined with the meeting, the Mercedes photograph, and the vehicle paint, it mattered.

At 8:24, another unsent draft appeared.

She keeps flashing her lights.

Four minutes before the crash.

My hands trembled.

I wanted to imagine Olivia driving calmly.

Instead I saw headlights in her mirror.

Fear.

Wet pavement.

Maya only weeks old.

Ethan waiting at home.

Reed put a hand on the file.

"We're close."

"Close doesn't change what happened."

"No. But it can change what happens next."

Meanwhile, Vanessa's financial position deteriorated.

The court declined to extend her temporary protective order after Dr. Morris's documentation and Ethan's recorded forensic interview contradicted key portions of her affidavit.

She was not charged for losing the petition.

But her credibility was damaged.

My divorce attorney also obtained an order preventing either of us from transferring certain marital assets while litigation continued.

Vanessa's leverage narrowed.

So she attacked the weakest point left.

Nathan.

She sent prosecutors documents suggesting Nathan ordered her to follow Olivia that night.

The messages looked genuine.

Nathan's number appeared at the top.

"Follow her. Find out where she's going."

Nathan stared at them.

"I never sent that."

We had heard that before.

Sometimes he lied.

Sometimes he didn't.

This time forensic metadata would decide whether I lost my brother completely.

📖 The message accusing Nathan was authentic—but not in the way Vanessa expected, and its origin exposed how she had impersonated people for years. 👇
