Chapter 3 - BOX 417

At 4:18 that afternoon, Commonwealth Private Trust told me somebody had tried to access Box 417 three weeks earlier.

I had called from my study while Ethan and Maya stayed beside me.

Vanessa was downstairs.

I had locked the study door.

The bank officer would not reveal a name over the phone, but she confirmed the attempt had been denied because the person lacked both the original key and acceptable authorization.

"Did they present identification?"

"Mr. Carter, I can discuss the record when you appear in person."

"Was it my wife?"

A pause.

"I can't answer that."

That pause was enough.

I arranged to be there when the bank opened the following morning.

Then I called Dr. Helen Morris, Maya's pediatrician.

I described the hair pulling.

She told me to bring Maya in immediately.

Ethan didn't want to stay home with Vanessa.

That was the moment I understood how badly I had failed to notice what was happening under my own roof.

"You're coming too," I told him.

Vanessa intercepted us at the entrance.

"Where are you taking them?"

"Doctor."

"Maya is fine."

I looked at my daughter's scalp.

A red patch showed beneath her fine blond hair.

"No, she's not."

Vanessa glanced toward Ethan.

"You've filled their heads with nonsense in twenty minutes."

I stepped closer.

"No. You put fear in them before I got here."

Her mouth tightened.

Then her tone softened.

"Arthur, please. We had a difficult afternoon. Maya got into Olivia's things. I panicked."

"Why?"

"Because that room is painful."

"Then why search it?"

She had no answer.

At the clinic, Dr. Morris documented tenderness on Maya's scalp and photographed Ethan's reddened cheek with my permission.

She also asked to speak to Ethan privately.

I stayed outside the exam room.

Ten minutes later, she invited me back.

Ethan sat on the table, staring at his sneakers.

"This wasn't the first time," Dr. Morris said.

I felt the room narrow.

Ethan told me Vanessa had grabbed his arm hard enough to bruise him two weeks earlier after he entered her bedroom without knocking.

She told him if he complained, I would send him to boarding school because I wanted a "new family."

I crouched in front of him.

"Ethan, look at me."

His eyes lifted.

"That was never true."

His lower lip trembled.

"I thought maybe it was."

I hugged him until he stopped shaking.

Back home, Vanessa was gone.

Her clothes were still there.

Her car wasn't.

On the kitchen counter lay her wedding ring.

Beside it was a note.

You chose dead Olivia over your living wife.

I almost believed she had simply fled.

Then I checked the cedar box.

The Commonwealth receipt was gone.

The key remained in my pocket.

Someone had entered my locked study while we were at the doctor.

And there was only one spare study key.

My younger brother Nathan had it.
