Chapter 9 - THE VOICE ON THE DRIVE

The password was not a word.
It was a date.
June 12, 2015.
The day Olivia and I bought our first home.
Nathan remembered the card because Olivia had written "first roof" beside the numbers.
The flash drive opened.
Inside were folders of invoices, exported emails, photographs of handwritten notes, and three audio files.
Detective Reed insisted we make a forensic copy before opening anything.
By 7:40 p.m., we listened to the first recording in my study.
Olivia's voice filled the room.
Calm.
Controlled.
Alive.
"Charles, I know Vantage is tied to Vanessa Hale."
Vanessa's maiden name.
Then Charles Welles answered.
"You don't understand the consequences of what you're accusing people of."
My chest tightened.
Charles.
My family's lawyer.
Olivia continued.
"I understand someone used Arthur's credentials."
"Then speak to Arthur."
"I tried. Somebody deleted the audit packet before he saw it."
Charles lowered his voice.
"Olivia, stop digging."
"Why?"
A long silence.
"Because this goes higher than Vanessa."
The recording ended.
Nathan stared at the speakers.
I felt rage, but also clarity.
For nine chapters of my life compressed into two days, I had been asking whether Vanessa was hiding something.
Now I knew she was.
But she wasn't operating alone.
The second recording captured Olivia speaking privately into her phone.
She documented dates, payments, threats, and her fear that Ethan could be used against her.
She never claimed anyone planned to kill her.
She did say she believed Charles was protecting "someone with authority inside Carter Development."
Nathan whispered, "Me."
"Maybe."
But the third recording changed that assumption.
Olivia confronted a man.
His voice was muffled at first.
Then unmistakable.
My father.
Robert Carter.
He had died eight months after Olivia.
I gripped the edge of the desk.
Olivia said, "You approved Vantage."
My father replied, "I approved a consulting arrangement. I didn't approve theft."
"Then help me stop it."
"I can't expose this without destroying Arthur's company."
"You're protecting the company over your son."
"I'm protecting my son from a scandal he doesn't understand."
There it was.
The larger betrayal.
My father knew some part of the scheme.
But the recording also cleared him of one assumption: he sounded frightened, not in control.
Before it ended, he said something worse.
"Vanessa isn't the architect, Olivia. She's the collector."
"Collector for whom?"
My father answered with a name.
Charles.
Nathan swore under his breath.
I said nothing.
My family's lawyer had represented my father, my company, my estate, and later my marriage to Vanessa.
He hadn't merely watched the doors.

He had been holding the keys.
📖 Charles had protected the scheme for years, but when we reached his office, we found proof Vanessa had just turned against him. 👇
