Chapter 18 - STORAGE 4621

Storage 4621 belonged to a facility twelve miles from Commonwealth Bank.
The account was still active.
Paid five years in advance.
Olivia had rented it under her maiden name.
Detective Reed obtained legal access because the lease passed to her estate.
I opened the unit with a facility manager beside us.
No hidden fortune waited inside.
No dramatic wall of evidence.
Just four banker boxes, an old laptop, a locked metal cash box, and Maya's first hospital blanket folded neatly on top.
I had to stop for a moment.
Olivia had packed fear beside motherhood.
The first box held original vendor agreements.
The second contained printed bank records.
The third held copies of messages between Vanessa, Charles, and Melissa.
The fourth contained personal files.
The cash box was empty.
The laptop powered on.
Its drive was encrypted.
We sent it for forensic examination.
Then Rachel noticed handwritten labels beneath the boxes.

Arthur.
Nathan.
Robert.
Vanessa.
Olivia had separated what each person knew.
My section hurt the most.
It contained unanswered emails Olivia had drafted to me but never sent.
She wrote about my habit of dismissing financial concerns when they involved my father.
She was right.
I had trusted Robert's judgment over hers more than once.
Not cruelly.
Not intentionally.
But consistently enough that she stopped coming to me first.
That was my consequence.
Vanessa exploited a weakness that already existed.
Nathan's section showed Olivia still believed he could be pulled out of Charles's influence.
Robert's showed my father knew about improper consulting structures but not the full theft.
Vanessa's section was different.
It contained surveillance photographs.
Olivia had hired a private investigator.
Photos showed Vanessa meeting Charles at hotels, banks, and the Vantage office.
One set showed Vanessa outside my home seven months before Olivia died.
Watching from across the street.
I sat down on the concrete floor.
She had known my children.
Known my routine.
Known where we lived.
Long before our supposed first meeting.
Reed turned over one photograph.
A license plate was visible.
Silver Mercedes.
The same model Vanessa drove.
The date was the night Olivia died.
8:16 p.m.
The photograph had been taken by the investigator outside the Vantage building.
Vanessa's Mercedes was there.
At 8:16.
Twelve minutes before Olivia's crash.
That did not place her on Route 47.
But it destroyed her fundraiser alibi.
The forensic team then called about the laptop.
They had recovered a partially deleted audio recording.
Olivia's voice.
Vanessa's voice.
Recorded at 7:53 p.m. the night of the crash.
And Olivia said the words I had waited sixteen months to hear.
May you like
"If anything happens to me tonight, Arthur will know you were here."
📖 The recovered recording finally proved Vanessa lied about her last meeting with Olivia, but its final seconds implicated someone I had already begun forgiving. 👇
