Chapter 12 - The Word “Furnace”

Detective Aaron Mills ordered everyone except medical staff out of Lily’s room.

Caleb refused to move farther than the glass wall.

He stood where his daughter could still see him.

Warren was escorted into the hallway but not arrested.

Not yet.

His attorneys were already calling the sheriff’s office.

Meredith remained beside Lily’s bed.

Her hands shook as she adjusted the blanket.

“Sweetheart,” she whispered, “what did you mean by furnace?”

Lily immediately closed her eyes.

The monitor quickened.

Dr. Helen Foster raised one hand.

“That is enough.”

Meredith stopped.

Through the glass, Caleb saw his daughter’s fingers curl into the blanket.

Not from pain.

From fear.

Detective Mills approached Caleb.

“Does the Blackwell property have a furnace?”

“Every house in Pennsylvania has one.”

“I mean something unusual.”

Caleb thought about Warren’s estate.

The old brick mansion sat on thirty acres outside Millstone.

Behind it stood several industrial buildings from the steel company Warren’s father once owned.

Most were abandoned.

One building contained an old foundry furnace.

Warren used it during charity tours, calling it a monument to the Blackwell family legacy.

Caleb had seen it once.

A massive circular chamber.

Brick walls blackened by decades of heat.

A steel door with a curved locking handle.

The same curve as Warren’s bracelet.

Caleb’s stomach tightened.

“The family property has an industrial furnace.”

Mills looked toward Lily.

“Operational?”

“Warren claimed it wasn’t.”

A hospital social worker entered carrying Lily’s earlier drawings.

Every picture showed a brick building.

Smoke.

A black curved shape.

Dr. Foster placed one drawing beside a photograph of the Blackwell foundry.

The windows matched.

The chimney matched.

Even the narrow side door matched.

Lily had not been drawing an imaginary building.

She had been drawing a place she knew.

Caleb looked toward Warren through the hallway glass.

Warren was speaking calmly into a phone.

Still confident.

Still certain his name could protect him.

Then Detective Mills said, “We need a warrant for the Blackwell property.”

Warren heard him.

His polished expression finally cracked.

👉 Lily’s single word had led police to the abandoned Blackwell foundry—but Warren was suddenly more afraid of what they might find there than of the burns on her body.
