Chapter 18 - The Night Meredith Did Nothing

Meredith sat across from Detective Mills.
Caleb remained beside her, but he did not touch her.
She began at 9:14 p.m.
The night of the fire, Warren called her and ordered her to bring Lily to the estate.
He said Lily had stolen documents from his office.
Meredith protested.
Warren threatened to expose Caleb’s classified deployment location to people connected to a private security contract.
She did not know whether the threat was real.
She brought Lily anyway.
At the mansion, Warren took Lily’s backpack and found a small folded page.
Otis had slipped it to her during an earlier visit.
It contained a phone number and the words:
Tell your father.
Warren became furious.
He dragged Lily toward the foundry.
Meredith followed.
She begged him to stop.
He shoved her against a wall.
Then he locked Lily inside the main foundry room.
Otis was still beneath the floor.
Warren wanted Lily to tell him where the rest of Otis’s records were hidden.
She did not know.
Warren heated the bracelet against the furnace casing.
Meredith looked down at her own hands.
“I saw him press it against her arm.”
Caleb’s face became still.
Too still.
Mills leaned forward.
“What did you do?”
“I screamed.”
“Did you physically intervene?”
“No.”
“Did you call police?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“He said he would kill Caleb overseas.”
Caleb closed his eyes.
Meredith continued.
Otis began striking the floor from below.
The noise distracted Warren.
Meredith pulled Lily toward the door.
Warren grabbed her.
During the struggle, Otis broke through the ventilation duct and escaped.
Warren panicked.
He poured accelerant across the room.
He said the fire would erase everything.
Meredith realized Lily was still near the furnace.
She tried to reach her.
Warren locked Meredith outside.
Then lit the trail.
“Who entered the building after ignition?” Mills asked.
Meredith looked at Caleb.
“No one.”
Caleb frowned.
“Warren said he rescued her.”
“He didn’t.”
“Then who did?”
Meredith shook her head.
“I don’t know. I was unconscious near the service road when firefighters arrived.”
Warren had not saved Lily.
Someone else carried her from the burning foundry.
And that person disappeared before emergency crews arrived.
👉 Meredith admitted Warren deliberately set the fire with Lily inside—but the unknown rescuer suggested Otis had returned instead of escaping.
