Chapter 24 - The Offer Warren Made His Daughter
Warren requested a private meeting with Meredith.
Her attorney advised against it.
She agreed only if the conversation was recorded.
Warren entered the detention room wearing jail clothing.
Without his navy suit, gold watch, and polished shoes, he looked older.
But his eyes remained controlling.
“Merry.”
Meredith stiffened.
He had used that nickname whenever he wanted obedience.
“You hurt Lily.”
Warren sighed.
“You have always been emotional.”
“The photographs show you.”
“Otis manipulated them.”
“The hospital found thirty-one burns.”
“You were her mother.”
The accusation landed exactly where he intended.
Meredith’s eyes filled.
Warren leaned forward.
“If you testify against me, the prosecution will ask where you were.”
“I know.”
“They will charge you.”
“Maybe.”
“You will lose Lily.”
Meredith breathed slowly.
“That is for Lily and the court to decide.”
Warren’s confidence faltered.
He offered a deal.
Meredith would testify that Otis acted alone.
Warren would use his remaining influence to protect her from prosecution.
He would pay for Lily’s treatment.
Secure Caleb’s military future.
Restore the family’s reputation.
Meredith looked at him.
“You still think everything can be bought.”
“Everything can.”
“No.”
She reached into her bag and removed a photograph.
Lily in the hospital.
Bandaged.
Small.
Silent.
“You cannot buy the moment she stopped calling me Mom.”
Warren looked away.
Meredith continued.
“You taught me that protecting the family meant protecting you.”
Her voice shook.
“I believed you so completely that I left my own daughter unprotected.”
Warren’s jaw hardened.
“You are weak.”
“Yes.”
The answer surprised him.
“I was weak. And you used it.”
She stood.
“But I am done using weakness as an excuse.”
Before leaving, Meredith placed Warren’s black steel bracelet on the table.
Police had released it temporarily for the recorded confrontation.
Warren stared at it.
Meredith said, “That is all your family name means now.”
Then she walked out.
