Chapter 21 - The Cabin Raid

Tactical officers surrounded the hunting cabin before dawn.

Detective Mills called Otis and instructed him to step outside with empty hands.

No response.

The front door stood partly open.

Inside, officers found blood on the floor.

A burned coat.

Medical supplies.

The back window was broken.

Otis was gone.

Tire tracks led toward a logging road.

Caleb received a photograph twenty minutes later.

Otis tied to a chair.

A newspaper from that morning held beside his face.

A message beneath it read:

Trade the evidence for the man.

The sender demanded every photograph from the foundry, the body-camera card, and Otis’s financial records.

Warren was still inside the hospital under legal observation.

He could not have sent the message personally.

His network remained active.

Detectives traced the burner phone to one of Warren’s security companies.

The company director was Graham Pike.

Former sheriff’s captain.

Brother of the corrupt deputy.

Warren had built overlapping layers of loyalty.

Police.

Security.

Judges.

Contractors.

If one person failed, another protected him.

Caleb studied the hostage photograph.

Otis’s eyes were not looking at the camera.

They were angled toward the lower-right corner.

His left hand formed a partial military-style signal.

Three fingers.

Then two.

Then a closed fist.

Caleb recognized it.

Building three.

Second floor.

Hostiles present.

Otis had once served in the Army before working for Warren.

He was giving a location.

Blackwell Industrial Park contained numbered warehouses.

Building Three had a second-floor office.

Mills prepared the raid.

Caleb demanded to join.

“No,” Mills said.

“I understand the layout.”

“You are emotionally involved.”

“I can identify Otis.”

“You are not law enforcement.”

Caleb looked through the hospital glass at Lily.

Then nodded.

He hated the decision.

But his daughter needed him alive more than he needed revenge.

As the tactical team departed, Meredith approached him.

“Dad has a private tunnel beneath Building Three.”

Caleb turned.

“How do you know?”

“I played there as a child.”

👉 Otis secretly identified the warehouse where he was held—but only Meredith knew about the escape tunnel Warren’s men would use when police arrived.
