Chapter 32 - The First Visit

Meredith’s first supervised visit occurred four months later.

The room contained toys, soft chairs, and a therapist.

Caleb waited behind a one-way window.

Lily entered holding a stuffed horse.

Her bandages were gone.

New pink skin covered parts of her arms and leg.

She walked slowly.

Meredith remained seated.

She did not rush toward her.

“Hi, Lily.”

Lily looked at the floor.

“Hi.”

The therapist guided them gently.

Meredith had written a letter but did not read it.

Instead, she said one sentence.

“I should have believed you.”

Lily looked up.

Meredith continued.

“I was supposed to keep you safe, and I didn’t.”

No excuses.

No mention of Warren’s threats.

No request for forgiveness.

Lily hugged the stuffed horse.

“Were you scared?”

“Yes.”

“More than me?”

Meredith’s face crumpled.

“No.”

The answer mattered.

Adults often centered their fear.

Meredith did not.

Lily asked, “Why didn’t you take me home?”

Meredith swallowed.

“Because I was weak and because I kept hoping Grandpa would become someone he was not.”

“Is he coming back?”

“No.”

“Ever?”

“No.”

Lily studied her mother.

Then placed the stuffed horse on the table between them.

“You can hold her.”

Meredith reached slowly.

Lily allowed it.

Not an embrace.

Not forgiveness.

A beginning.

Behind the glass, Caleb lowered his head.

Healing did not arrive like a courtroom verdict.

It came through small permissions.

A chair shared.

A toy offered.

A truthful answer that hurt.

👉 Lily allowed Meredith to hold her toy—but neither parent knew whether the child would ever feel safe living with both of them again.
