Chapter 6 - The Deputy Hesitates

Deputy Aaron Mills kept his handgun trained downward.

Not at Caleb.

At the floor between them.

He watched the photographs.

Then the bracelet.

Then Lily.

Training told him to separate the men immediately.

Experience told him something else was happening.

"Major..."

Caleb slowly looked toward him.

"I'm not hurting him."

Aaron saw it.

No excessive pressure.

Proper restraint.

Open airway.

Controlled leverage.

Exactly enough force.

Nothing more.

Then Aaron noticed Photograph Twenty-Seven.

The burn pattern curved around Lily's forearm.

Exactly like the bracelet.

His weapon lowered slightly.

He looked at Warren.

"Sir..."

Warren finally spoke.

"It means nothing."

Nobody believed him.
