Chapter 3 - The Town's Most Powerful Man

Everyone in Millstone, Pennsylvania knew Warren Blackwell.

He owned construction companies.

Half the commercial property downtown.

The largest political fundraising committee.

Three local newspapers called him "the man who built Millstone."

Others called him something else.

Untouchable.

Judges attended his charity dinners.

Police captains played golf with him.

Bank presidents asked for favors.

Warren enjoyed reminding people.

"You don't win against money."

Meredith grew up believing her father could solve anything.

Until she married Caleb.

Caleb respected Warren at first.

Until every conversation became control.

"You'll leave the Army."

"No."

"Lily belongs here."

"No."

"My granddaughter carries my name."

"No."

Every answer Caleb gave ended the same way.

No.

Warren hated that word.

When Caleb deployed overseas...

Warren quietly moved closer.

Helping Meredith.

Picking Lily up from school.

Paying bills.

Buying gifts.

Becoming indispensable.

By the time Caleb returned on leave six months later...

Lily barely smiled anymore.
