Chapter 33 - Caleb Comes Home

The Army offered Caleb another deployment.

He declined.

Not permanently.

But for now.

He transferred to a training command in Pennsylvania and accepted a less prestigious position.

Some officers called it a career sacrifice.

Caleb did not.

He had missed too many quiet signs because distance turned family life into scheduled phone calls.

He rented a small house near Lily’s rehabilitation center.

No family money.

No Blackwell property.

No security gates.

Lily chose her own bedroom.

She insisted the door remain open at night.

Caleb installed a soft hallway light.

The first week, she woke screaming whenever the heater activated.

Caleb replaced the furnace with an electric heat pump.

The contractor thought the decision excessive.

Caleb did not explain.

He attended therapy sessions.

Learned not to ask leading questions.

Learned that discipline could become rigidity.

Learned that protecting Lily did not mean controlling every inch of her life.

One night, Lily found his military watch on the counter.

“Are you leaving again?”

Caleb knelt.

“Not now.”

“Later?”

“Maybe someday.”

Her face tightened.

“But we decide together what makes you feel safe.”

Lily thought about it.

Then gave the watch back.

“Keep it.”

“Why?”

“So you know when to come home.”

Caleb hugged her carefully.

The scars on her back remained tender.

She tolerated only light pressure.

He adjusted immediately.

Everything about fatherhood now required attention.

Not battlefield attention.

Quieter attention.

The kind that noticed when a child stopped drawing horses.

👉 Caleb gave up another deployment to remain beside Lily—but the future of his marriage still depended on whether Meredith could rebuild trust without demanding a place in their home.
