Chapter 26 - Lily’s Recorded Interview
Lily’s forensic interview took place six weeks after the fire.
No courtroom.
No uniformed officers inside the room.
Only a child specialist, a camera, soft chairs, and a box of crayons.
Caleb and Meredith watched from separate rooms.
The specialist asked Lily to draw the Blackwell estate.
Lily drew the mansion first.
Then the foundry.
Then a small square beneath it.
“Who stayed there?” the specialist asked.
“Mr. Otis.”
“How did you know?”
“I heard him crying.”
“What happened when you found him?”
“He said Grandpa was bad.”
“What did Grandpa do?”
Lily colored the bracelet black.
“He made it hot.”
“Where did he touch you?”
Lily pointed to her wrapped arm.
Then her leg.
Then her shoulder.
“Why?”
“So I would forget.”
“Forget what?”
“That Mr. Otis said Grandpa hurt people.”
The specialist waited.
“What happened the night of the fire?”
“Mommy said stop.”
Meredith covered her mouth in the observation room.
“Did Mommy help you?”
“She tried.”
“Did she get you out?”
Lily shook her head.
“Grandpa pushed her.”
“What did Grandpa do next?”
“He made the floor shiny.”
Accelerant.
“He lit it?”
Lily nodded.
“Who got you out?”
“Mr. Otis.”
“How?”
“He broke the little wall.”
The ventilation duct.
“Was Grandpa there?”
“He watched.”
Caleb leaned closer to the glass.
“What did Grandpa say?”
Lily’s fingers stopped.
The specialist waited.
Finally Lily whispered:
“Let them burn.”
Meredith collapsed into her chair.
Caleb closed his eyes.
The words removed the final uncertainty.
Warren did not lose control.
He did not miscalculate the fire.
He chose to leave Lily and Otis inside.
👉 Lily’s interview proved Warren intentionally left them to die—but the defense planned to attack the credibility of a traumatized seven-year-old.
