Chapter 25 - Caleb and Meredith

Caleb met Meredith in the hospital chapel.

She sat alone in the back row.

“I’m going to plead guilty,” she said.

“To what?”

“Child endangerment. Failure to protect. Whatever they charge.”

Caleb sat several feet away.

“You should follow your attorney’s advice.”

“I’m not asking about strategy.”

“What are you asking?”

“Whether you hate me.”

Caleb looked toward the empty altar.

“I don’t know what I feel.”

“I let him near her.”

“Yes.”

“I ignored signs.”

“Yes.”

“I believed him instead of Lily.”

“Yes.”

Each answer hurt.

Caleb refused to soften the truth.

Meredith nodded.

“I kept telling myself I was protecting you both.”

“You were protecting yourself from your father.”

“I know.”

Caleb finally looked at her.

“That doesn’t mean you wanted Lily hurt.”

“No.”

“But wanting something is not the same as stopping it.”

Meredith began crying quietly.

“I don’t expect you to forgive me.”

“Good.”

She flinched.

Caleb continued.

“Forgiveness is not the first thing Lily needs from either of us.”

“What does she need?”

“Safety. Honesty. Time. No pressure to comfort the adults who failed her.”

Meredith wiped her face.

“I can do that.”

“You will have to prove it for years.”

“I know.”

Caleb stood.

At the doorway, Meredith asked, “Are we over?”

He paused.

Their marriage had already been damaged by distance.

Deployment.

Warren’s interference.

Now something deeper stood between them.

“I cannot decide that while Lily is still afraid to sleep.”

Meredith nodded.

It was not hope.

It was honesty.

And honesty was more than Warren had allowed inside their family for decades.

👉 Caleb refused to promise forgiveness or save the marriage—but Meredith finally understood that Lily’s healing had to come before her own need for redemption.
