Chapter 1 - The Hand on Her Face

Daniel Hale grabbed Rebecca by the jaw in the middle of the courtroom.

His fingers pressed into her cheeks as he forced her face upward.

“Those medals won’t save you.”

The spectators went silent.

Rebecca’s injured shoulder pulled backward beneath the fitted white military uniform she had worn for the custody hearing. Pain flashed through her body, but she kept her spine straight.

Behind Daniel, his mother watched with a satisfied smile.

Margaret had spent months calling Rebecca unstable, dangerous, and unfit to raise her own daughter.

Now Daniel was humiliating her in front of the judge.

The court deputy stepped toward them.

Rebecca moved first.

Her hand rose slowly.

She wrapped her fingers around Daniel’s wrist and removed it from her face with precise, controlled force.

Daniel stumbled half a step.

Rebecca’s jaw trembled once.

Then it locked.

“Take your hand off a United States officer.”

Daniel’s polished smile cracked.

Before he could answer, thirteen-year-old Sophie stood near the witness area.

She held a tablet with both trembling hands.

Margaret’s smile disappeared.

“Sophie,” Daniel warned.

The girl looked at the judge.

“I need you to hear something.”

She tapped the screen.

Her recorded sobbing voice filled the courtroom.

“Grandma made me lie about Mom.”

The judge slowly opened Rebecca’s military file.

Daniel looked toward the exit.

The deputy moved into his path.

Then the judge closed the file with one deliberate motion.
