Chapter 14 - Margaret Turns on Her Son
The typed statement Sophie had been forced to memorize was entered into evidence.
Metadata showed it had been created on Margaret’s computer.
Margaret claimed Daniel dictated it.
Daniel immediately denied that.
“You wrote it.”
“You told me what happened.”
“Nothing happened.”
The words escaped before he could stop them.
The courtroom went still.
His attorney touched his arm.
Daniel realized what he had admitted.
There had been no assault by Rebecca.
Margaret’s face hardened.
“You said she grabbed Sophie.”
“I said Sophie needed to describe Rebecca’s behavior.”
“You said the court needed something physical.”
Daniel leaned closer.
“Stop talking.”
The judge ordered both of them to face forward.
Margaret’s fear became anger.
She had spent decades protecting Daniel from consequences.
Now he was preparing to leave her with the blame.
She looked at the judge.
“He said it was the only way to protect Sophie.”
Daniel’s face twisted.
“Mother.”
“He said Rebecca would take the house and leave him bankrupt.”
“You agreed.”
“I believed you.”
“You created the statement.”
“You told me to.”
Their carefully constructed alliance shattered in public.
Sophie covered her ears.
Rebecca moved instinctively toward her.
Then stopped, waiting for permission from the court advocate.
The advocate nodded.
Rebecca knelt beside her daughter.
Daniel watched them.
His family was collapsing, but he still looked most frightened by the financial documents.
The judge noticed.
“Mr. Hale, your daughter is crying.”
Daniel glanced at Sophie as though remembering she was present.
