Chapter 3 - The Story Sophie Was Taught
Rebecca did not ask what Sophie had said.
Not immediately.
She first contacted a family-law attorney named Allison Grant.
Allison warned her that questioning Sophie directly could be portrayed as coaching a child witness.
“Document everything,” Allison said. “Do not confront Daniel. Do not confront Margaret.”
Rebecca followed the instruction.
She photographed the custody petition.
Saved every message.
Downloaded the home security logs.
Requested her medical records.
Then she waited.
Two days later, Sophie returned from Daniel’s house with swollen eyes and a headache.
Margaret had kept her awake past midnight.
“She said we had to practice.”
“Practice what?” Rebecca asked gently.
Sophie’s breathing changed.
“What I’m supposed to say.”
Rebecca remained still.
“Did she tell you to say I frightened you?”
Sophie nodded.
“Did she tell you what would happen if you refused?”
Another nod.
“She said Dad would lose his house. She said he might go to jail because of you.”
Rebecca felt anger rise through her body.
She controlled it.
Sophie needed safety, not fury.
“What did your grandmother ask you to say?”
“That you pushed me.”
Rebecca closed her eyes for one second.
She had never laid a hand on her daughter.
Sophie began crying.
“I’m sorry.”
Rebecca moved closer but did not touch her until Sophie leaned into her first.
“You are not responsible for what adults made you say.”
“Dad said nobody would believe him unless I helped.”
Rebecca held her while the girl shook.
Later that night, Sophie asked if she could use an old tablet for school recordings.
Rebecca gave it to her.
