Chapter 12 - The House and the Trust
The next audio file was shorter.
Daniel and Margaret were speaking in the kitchen.
Sophie had left the tablet recording inside her backpack.
Margaret said, “If Rebecca keeps shared custody, you cannot touch the trust.”
Daniel answered, “Then she cannot keep shared custody.”
“What about the house?”
“The military restriction ends if a judge declares her incapable of managing family assets.”
“And if that fails?”
A chair scraped.
Then Daniel said, “I’ll make her look dangerous enough that nobody questions what I do next.”
The judge removed his glasses.
Allison introduced Sophie’s trust documents.
Rebecca’s father had created the account for education, medical care, and future housing.
Daniel had no legal authority over it.
Yet he had contacted the financial institution three times, presenting himself as Sophie’s primary custodian.
He also attempted to redirect statements to a private mailbox.
Margaret’s address appeared on the application.
She claimed she knew nothing about it.
The prosecutor from the county fraud division, present as an observer, requested copies.
Daniel’s attorney asked for a recess.
Daniel refused.
He leaned toward her and whispered angrily.
She moved her chair away from him.
The judge then opened Rebecca’s military file.
He reviewed the financial protection documents attached years earlier.
Rebecca had anticipated that deployment and injury could create confusion around her assets.
She had appointed an independent fiduciary.
Not Daniel.
Not Margaret.
The house could not be leveraged through a custody order.
The trust could not be accessed through parental status alone.
Daniel’s entire financial motive had been based on a misunderstanding.
