Chapter 15 - The Judge’s Question
The judge closed Rebecca’s military file.
The sound echoed through the room.
He looked first at Daniel.
Then Margaret.
“Do either of you know who she really is?”
Daniel said nothing.
The judge continued.
“You have repeatedly described Major Hale’s discipline as cruelty.”
He placed one hand on the file.
“These records show a woman commended for protecting civilians, negotiating under threat, managing evacuations, and making decisions under extreme pressure.”
He turned toward Margaret.
“You described her emotional control as evidence that she lacks maternal feeling.”
Margaret’s mouth tightened.
The judge looked toward Sophie, still beside Rebecca.
“Yet the child sought safety beside her mother after being pressured by both of you.”
Daniel stood abruptly.
“This court is being distracted by medals.”
The deputy moved closer.
The judge’s voice remained calm.
“No. This court is examining conduct.”
He listed it.
Witness coercion.
False allegations.
Attempted interference with protected assets.
Undisclosed debt.
Physical intimidation inside the courtroom.
Daniel’s breathing became shallow.
“You have misunderstood everything.”
“Then help me understand.”
Daniel looked around.
His attorney would not meet his eyes.
Margaret gripped the chair.
Sophie held Rebecca’s hand.
The spectators watched in silence.
Daniel had controlled every room by speaking with confidence.
This room required evidence.
And every piece of evidence contradicted him.
The judge ordered Daniel to surrender his phone to the deputy for preservation under the existing discovery order.
Daniel refused.
The deputy repeated the instruction.
