Chapter 13 - The Letter in the File
The letter had been written by a military family financial counselor four years earlier.
It documented Rebecca’s concerns about Daniel’s spending.
At the time, his real-estate business had accumulated hidden debt.
He used joint credit cards to cover company expenses.
He also transferred money from Sophie’s savings account before Rebecca stopped him.
Rebecca had not reported him.
She required repayment.
Separated the accounts.
Protected the trust.
Then she offered marriage counseling.
Daniel told everyone she had humiliated him.
The counselor’s letter described Rebecca’s decision in careful language:
Major Hale has expressed fear that formal reporting could damage her husband’s professional future and their daughter’s relationship with him. She has chosen protective financial measures while continuing to support reconciliation.
The judge looked at Rebecca.
“You protected him?”
Rebecca answered quietly.
“At the time, I believed accountability inside the marriage might change him.”
Daniel stared at her.
Margaret whispered, “She’s lying.”
The judge turned.
“The letter predates this litigation by four years.”
Rebecca had concealed Daniel’s first attempt to misuse Sophie’s money.
Daniel repaid it only because she confronted him with bank records.
He promised it would never happen again.
Instead, he learned to hide the next attempt more carefully.
Allison introduced updated statements.
Daniel’s company owed creditors nearly nine hundred thousand dollars.
He had personally guaranteed part of the debt.
The failed loan against Rebecca’s house was not for expansion.
It was intended to prevent foreclosure on two investment properties Daniel had never disclosed.
Daniel’s face became pale.
The judge asked whether he wished to explain.
Daniel looked toward Margaret.
