Chapter 11 - Grandma Made Me Lie
The judge ruled that portions of the recording could be heard to assess witness coercion and child safety.
Sophie returned.
She held the tablet with both hands.
Then she pressed play.
“Grandma made me lie about Mom.”
Her recorded sobbing filled the courtroom.
Margaret gripped the back of a chair.
Daniel’s eyes widened.
The recording continued.
Margaret’s voice said, “Rebecca chose her career over you.”
Sophie answered, “She came home.”
Daniel spoke next.
“If you do not help me, the judge could send you somewhere worse.”
The judge leaned forward.
Sophie’s recorded voice broke.
“Mom never pushed me.”
Daniel replied, “Truth is what people can prove.”
Allison looked at him.
The sentence hung in the courtroom.
Margaret whispered, “Turn it off.”
The judge heard her.
“Mrs. Hale, do not speak.”
The recording continued.
Daniel discussed Rebecca’s pension.
Margaret discussed the house.
Then Daniel said, “Once I have custody, the court will make her pay. She’ll lose the house before she admits she lost.”
Rebecca closed her eyes.
Not from shock.
From confirmation.
Sophie had carried all of this alone.
The final section captured Margaret rehearsing the false accusation repeatedly until Sophie could say it without crying.
When the audio ended, no one moved.
The judge looked at Sophie.
“Did your mother know you recorded this?”
“No, sir.”
“Did she ask you to lie?”
“No.”
“Why did you record it?”
Sophie looked at Rebecca.
