Chapter 9 - Sophie Takes the Stand
Sophie walked to the witness area with small, careful steps.
The judge softened his voice.
“You are not in trouble. Do you understand?”
She nodded.
Daniel watched her closely.
Margaret gave her a tiny encouraging smile.
It looked loving to everyone who did not know what it meant.
Sophie’s hands began shaking.
The judge asked whether she felt safe with her mother.
Sophie looked at Daniel.
Then at Margaret.
“I don’t know.”
Rebecca felt the answer like a blade.
She did not react.
Daniel’s attorney asked whether Rebecca had ever frightened her.
Sophie swallowed.
“Yes.”
“Did she grab you?”
A long pause followed.
Daniel leaned forward.
Margaret’s eyes narrowed.
Sophie whispered, “Yes.”
Rebecca remained still.
Allison requested permission to ask questions.
“Sophie, did someone help you prepare your answers?”
“No.”
“Did anyone tell you what might happen if you gave a different answer?”
“No.”
The child’s voice was becoming smaller.
The judge noticed.
He asked whether Sophie needed a break.
Daniel spoke before anyone else.
“She’s fine.”
The judge looked at him sharply.
Sophie’s eyes filled with tears.
Then she looked toward Rebecca.
Her mother did not signal.
Did not nod.
Did not rescue her.
Rebecca simply held her gaze with quiet love.
Sophie took a breath.
“I need my backpack.”
Daniel’s face changed.
Margaret sat forward.
The deputy retrieved it.
Sophie removed the tablet.
Daniel rose.
“This is inappropriate.”
The judge ordered him to sit.
Sophie held the device against her chest.
“I lied.”
