Chapter 16 - The Planned Disappearance
Daniel eventually handed over the phone.
A forensic review did not happen instantly.
But Allison already possessed screenshots sent anonymously two days earlier.
The sender was Daniel’s former business partner.
One message read:
Once I have the order, Sophie and I leave Virginia before Rebecca can appeal.
Another said:
Mom has a rental in Tennessee. We can keep the address quiet.
Daniel claimed the messages referred to a vacation.
The dates contradicted him.
The rental began the morning after the expected custody ruling.
Sophie’s school withdrawal form had already been prepared.
Rebecca had never been informed.
Margaret’s credit card paid the deposit.
The judge looked at her.
“Were you planning to remove this child from the state?”
Margaret shook her head.
Daniel spoke over her.
“No.”
The judge held up the record.
“Then why was a private school in Tennessee sent Sophie’s medical documents?”
Daniel turned toward his attorney.
She quietly requested permission to withdraw after the hearing.
His panic became visible.
He had expected Rebecca to lose access to Sophie gradually.
Instead, he intended to move quickly enough that legal challenges would become difficult.
Rebecca felt Sophie’s fingers tighten around hers.
“Did Dad want to take me away?”
Rebecca answered softly.
“The judge is making sure you are safe.”
She refused to burden Sophie with more than she needed.
The judge ordered immediate temporary restrictions.
Daniel could not remove Sophie from Virginia.
He could not contact her outside supervised settings.
Margaret was also restricted from unsupervised access.
These were not yet the final custody rulings.
But Daniel understood what they meant.
His plan was finished.
Then Sophie asked permission to speak.
The judge allowed it.
She faced her father.
“I would have loved you without the house.”
