Chapter 2 - The Custody Petition

Six weeks earlier, Rebecca had been served with an emergency custody petition.
Daniel claimed she suffered from violent episodes caused by military trauma.
He alleged that she kept weapons inside the house, screamed at Sophie during the night, and disappeared for hours without explanation.
Margaret signed a supporting statement.
She described Rebecca as “emotionally unpredictable and physically threatening.”
Daniel requested full custody.
He also asked the court to remove Rebecca from the family home until the case was resolved.
Rebecca read the petition twice.
Then she placed it carefully on the kitchen table.
Sophie sat across from her, pale and silent.
“Did Dad ask you to say these things?”
The girl stared at her hands.
“No.”
Rebecca recognized the answer immediately.
It was too fast.
Too flat.
Her daughter had been trained to deliver it.
Rebecca did not push.
She had spent twenty-three years in the Army learning that frightened people often stopped speaking when cornered.
So she made Sophie hot chocolate.
She sat beside her without asking another question.
After several minutes, Sophie whispered, “Are they going to take me away from you?”
Rebecca’s chest tightened.
“I am going to do everything legally possible to keep you safe.”
“Dad said you’ll lose.”
“He may believe that.”
“He said judges hate mothers with military records.”
Rebecca looked toward the custody petition.
Daniel had always admired her uniform in public.
In private, he used it against her.
Her discipline became coldness.
Her privacy became deception.
Her injuries became instability.
Then Sophie asked a question that changed everything.

“Mom… what happens if I already told the judge something that wasn’t true?”
👉 Rebecca realized the custody case had begun long before the papers reached her door.
