Chapter 17 - The Price of Control

Daniel lowered his eyes.
For one moment, Rebecca saw shame.
Then he looked at her and turned it into blame.
“You poisoned her against me.”
Sophie answered before Rebecca could.
“Mom never told me to hate you.”
Daniel stared at his daughter.
“You don’t understand adult problems.”
“I understand that you made me lie.”
His face tightened.
Margaret began crying.
This time, the tears were not elegant or controlled.
“I was trying to keep the family together.”
Sophie looked at her grandmother.
“You told me Mom would stop loving me if I told the truth.”
Margaret covered her mouth.
Rebecca felt fury rise again.
But she remained beside Sophie.
The judge ordered the court-appointed therapist to remain with the child after the hearing.
He also directed that the recording and financial materials be forwarded to the appropriate authorities for review.
Daniel faced potential consequences beyond custody court.
False statements.
Witness coercion.
Financial misconduct.
Possible attempted fraud involving Sophie’s trust.
Rebecca did not smile.
Justice did not feel triumphant while her daughter was crying.
It felt heavy.
Necessary.
Long overdue.
The judge recessed before issuing the final custody order.
Daniel was escorted to a separate room because of his courtroom conduct.
As he passed Rebecca, he whispered, “You destroyed me.”
She looked directly at him.
“No. I stopped protecting you from yourself.”
He had no answer.
Margaret followed with the deputy several steps behind.
Her shoulders were no longer proud.
The courtroom emptied slowly.
Sophie remained beside Rebecca.
“Are we going home?”
Rebecca knelt despite the pain in her shoulder.
“Yes.”
“Together?”
May you like
“Yes.”
👉 But before they could leave, the judge called them back for the ruling that would finally end Daniel’s control.
