Chapter 4 - The Recording in the Bedroom
The recording began with the sound of a bedroom door closing.
Margaret’s voice followed.
“Say it again.”
Sophie spoke quietly.
“Mom grabbed my arm and pushed me.”
“No. You sound uncertain.”
“It didn’t happen.”
A sharp silence filled the recording.
Then Daniel spoke.
“You want to stay with your father, don’t you?”
“I want both of you.”
“That is not an option anymore.”
Sophie started crying.
Margaret continued.
“Rebecca chose her career over this family for years. Now she must face consequences.”
“She saved people.”
“She abandoned you.”
“No, she didn’t.”
Daniel’s voice became colder.
“If you tell the truth the wrong way, the judge may send you somewhere neither of us can visit.”
That was the threat Sophie remembered most clearly.
Not that Daniel would hurt her.
That the court would take everyone away.
Margaret then handed her a written statement.
“Memorize it.”
The recording ended after twenty-three minutes.
Sophie hid the tablet beneath clothes inside her backpack.
But she did not tell Rebecca.
She was afraid Daniel would discover that her mother knew.
For three weeks, the tablet moved between both homes.
It collected more.
Margaret discussing the false allegations.
Daniel admitting Rebecca had never struck Sophie.
A conversation about Rebecca’s pension.
Another about the family house.
The custody case was not only about controlling Sophie.
Daniel wanted money.
Rebecca discovered that part when Allison obtained his financial disclosure.
Daniel was drowning in debt.

And if he gained full custody, he intended to demand child support, control the home, and argue that Rebecca’s military retirement benefits should support Sophie while Sophie lived with him.
