Chapter 7 - The First Hearing

At the first custody hearing, Daniel arrived in a tailored black suit.

Margaret sat behind him in an elegant dress.

They looked composed.

Respectable.

Concerned.

Rebecca wore a simple navy suit.

She had not yet chosen her military uniform.

Daniel’s attorney described her as an emotionally damaged veteran who used discipline to terrorize her family.

Rebecca’s hands remained folded.

Then Daniel testified.

He claimed Rebecca woke screaming from nightmares.

He claimed she once grabbed Sophie during an argument.

He claimed she threatened him with her military connections.

Allison asked for dates.

Daniel became vague.

She asked whether police had ever been called.

No.

Whether teachers had reported bruises.

No.

Whether doctors documented abuse.

No.

Daniel recovered quickly.

“Rebecca controls appearances,” he said. “She knows how to hide what she is.”

Margaret testified next.

She cried softly.

“She can turn cold in an instant. It is frightening.”

The judge granted temporary shared custody until a full evidentiary hearing.

He also ordered both parents not to discuss the case with Sophie.

Daniel violated that order the same evening.

Sophie returned to Rebecca’s house carrying a typed statement.

“Dad said I need to learn this before court.”

Rebecca did not read it in front of her.

She placed it in an envelope.

Then Sophie asked, “Would wearing your uniform make the judge hate you more?”

Rebecca felt the trap.

Daniel wanted the uniform to look threatening.

Margaret wanted Rebecca ashamed of it.

Rebecca looked at her daughter.

“What do you think it means?”

Sophie answered quietly.

“That you didn’t quit when people were scared.”

That night, Rebecca decided what she would wear at the final hearing.

👉 She would enter court in the uniform Daniel had spent years trying to turn into a symbol of shame.
