Chapter 10 - The Woman in the Hospital Corridor
Hospital security found Lorraine near the neonatal intensive care unit.
She wore sunglasses and carried a large handbag.
A nurse recognized her from the police bulletin.
Security stopped her before she reached the locked doors.
Inside her bag were forged documents granting her medical decision-making authority over Hannah.
A copy of the outdated insurance policy.
Two bottles of medication.
And a handwritten letter supposedly signed by Caleb.
The letter claimed Hannah was mentally unstable and Lorraine should take temporary custody of the newborn.
Lorraine insisted she came to protect her grandson.
Detective Reed asked why she carried sedatives.
“They are mine.”
The prescription was not in her name.
One bottle belonged to Thomas Rowan.
Caleb’s father had been dead fifteen years.
Lorraine’s face changed when Reed removed it from the bag.
That bottle connected both cases.
She was arrested in the hospital corridor.
Caleb watched from behind the glass doors of Hannah’s room.
Lorraine saw him.
“Caleb!”
He did not move.
“She is turning you against me!”
Hannah woke at the sound of her voice.
Caleb closed the blinds.
It was the first time in his life he had shut his mother out without explaining himself.
Lorraine began shouting.
“I saved you!”
Caleb stood beside Hannah.
“No,” he said quietly, though Lorraine could not hear him. “You trained me to need saving.”
Martin Cole was arrested hours later.
He attempted to destroy client files before police entered his office.
The recovered documents showed decades of fraud.
He helped Lorraine alter insurance policies, intercept mail, forge signatures, and conceal evidence after Thomas’s death.
In exchange, Lorraine gave him control of family assets.
The partnership began as greed.
It ended as mutual blackmail.
Martin agreed to cooperate.
He told prosecutors Lorraine had admitted giving Thomas medication before his death.
He also revealed that she expected Hannah’s emergency to end the same way.
“She said Caleb would hesitate if he thought Hannah was cheating,” Martin confessed.
