Chapter 8 - What Happened to Caleb’s Father
Martin Cole had served as the Rowan family attorney for twenty-five years.
He prepared Caleb’s trust.
He handled his father’s estate.
He recommended every insurance policy Lorraine purchased.
When police questioned him, Martin denied helping Lorraine.
Then investigators recovered the deleted messages.
He had disabled the security system remotely using administrator access.
He had obtained Hannah’s hospital appointment time.
He had advised Lorraine about the beneficiary rules.
Why would an attorney risk everything?
Because Lorraine had been paying him for years.
Payments hidden as consulting fees.
Detective Reed reopened Caleb’s father’s file.
Thomas Rowan died at fifty-one after collapsing in his study.
Lorraine said he complained of chest pain.
She waited forty minutes before calling an ambulance because she thought he was sleeping.
The official cause was cardiac arrest.
But Thomas had also changed his life insurance policy shortly before his death.
He removed Lorraine as sole beneficiary.
The change was never processed.
Martin claimed the paperwork arrived after Thomas died.
Now investigators found proof that Martin received it three days earlier.
Caleb sat in silence as Reed explained.
“Your mother may have used the same method before.”
Medication.
Delayed emergency help.
Altered financial documents.
A staged narrative.
Thomas had been portrayed as unhealthy and irresponsible.
Hannah had been portrayed as unfaithful.
Lorraine’s methods did not change.
Only the victim did.
Caleb remembered his father’s final week.
Thomas tried to meet him privately.
Lorraine canceled the dinner.
“She said he was confused.”
Detective Reed asked whether Thomas left any personal records.
Caleb remembered a navy suit jacket stored in the townhouse closet.
It had belonged to his father.
Hannah planned to donate it but kept forgetting.

A small envelope had been sewn beneath the pocket.

If anything happens to me, do not let your mother control the story.
There was also a key to a bank deposit box.
The box contained medical reports showing Thomas had been exposed to a blood-thinning drug he was never prescribed.
