Chapter 7 - The Appointment Lorraine Recorded
Hannah had attended a prenatal consultation alone one month earlier.
Caleb was traveling for work.
Dr. Morgan asked routine questions.
Any concerns?
Any stress at home?
Did she feel safe?
Hannah admitted she and Lorraine had been arguing.
She said:
“Sometimes I feel like this baby isn’t ours anymore. She acts like he belongs to her.”
Lorraine secretly recorded the appointment from outside the partially open door.
She later edited the sentence.
This baby isn’t ours.
Then added words from other conversations.
The baby may not be yours.
The audio was convincing enough to create doubt.
Lorraine planned to send it after Caleb found Dr. Morgan’s jacket.
A photograph.
An open suitcase.
A doctor in the house.
A fake confession.
Every clue pointing toward betrayal.
Caleb listened to the original hospital recording with permission.
The full sentence broke him.
Hannah had not been confessing an affair.
She had been asking for help.
Dr. Morgan had documented concern about coercive family behavior.
He recommended that Hannah limit contact with Lorraine.
Hannah never told Caleb.
“Why?” he asked when she was strong enough to speak.
“I knew how she would react.”
“And you thought I would defend her.”
Hannah did not answer.
That silence was enough.
Caleb had defended Lorraine for years.
“She’s difficult because she worries.”
“She had a hard life.”
“She doesn’t mean it that way.”
Every excuse had taught Hannah that telling the truth would create more conflict than enduring the abuse.
“I should have believed you before there was blood on the floor,” Caleb whispered.
Hannah looked at him.
“You should have believed me when I said I was uncomfortable.”
He nodded.
No defense.
No explanation.
Only truth.
Detective Reed traced the audio-editing software to Lorraine’s laptop.
He also recovered messages between Lorraine and someone saved as M.
One message read:
THE DOCTOR WILL BE THE EASIEST PART.
Another:
MAKE SURE THE CAMERA IS DOWN BEFORE I ARRIVE.
Lorraine had not acted alone.
Someone had disabled the townhouse cameras and helped her access hospital records.
The initials M pointed toward a person Caleb trusted.
