Chapter 11 - The Secret Lorraine Saved for Court

Lorraine’s attorney offered prosecutors a deal.
She would confess to poisoning Hannah if they dropped the investigation into Thomas’s death.
They refused.
At the preliminary hearing, Lorraine finally revealed her last defense.
Thomas Rowan was not Caleb’s biological father.
She claimed Thomas discovered the truth and became violent.
She said every financial change he made was an act of revenge.
Caleb sat beside Hannah in the courtroom.
Lorraine looked directly at him.
“Everything I did was to protect you from knowing.”
Caleb felt nothing.
Not shock.
Not rage.
Only exhaustion.
The prosecutor introduced Thomas’s private letter from the deposit box.
Thomas had known Caleb was not biologically his.
He learned when Caleb was six.
The letter read:
Blood did not make him my son. Loving him did.
Thomas never planned to abandon Caleb.
He planned to leave Lorraine and take Caleb with him.
Lorraine could not allow that.
Her final secret did not save her.
It destroyed her last excuse.
She had not killed Thomas to protect Caleb from rejection.
Thomas had already chosen him.
She killed him because he chose Caleb without needing her.
Caleb read the letter alone that night.
Hannah sat beside him.
“Does it change anything?” she asked.
“No.”
Then, after a pause:
“It changes everything she told me.”
Thomas was still his father.
But Lorraine had spent fifteen years using the secret to make Caleb believe no one would love him if she stopped.
Hannah reached for his hand.
“You were never hard to love.”
Caleb looked toward the NICU window.
Their son lay beneath soft lights, tiny but fighting.
He understood what fatherhood meant.
Not ownership.
Not control.
Presence.
Protection.
Truth.
The court ordered DNA testing only because Lorraine’s attorney challenged the estate.
The results identified Caleb’s biological father as Martin Cole.
The same attorney who helped Lorraine conceal Thomas’s death.
Martin had not helped her only for money.
