Chapter 14 - Hannah’s Final Recording

Hannah had activated her phone recorder while crawling beneath the bed.

She did it accidentally at first.

Her fingers struck the screen while reaching for the device.

The recording captured Lorraine moving through the bedroom.

Opening the suitcase.

Breaking the wedding frame.

Dragging Dr. Morgan’s jacket onto the chair.

Then Lorraine’s voice came close.

“You should have taken my offer.”

Hannah struggled to breathe.

“Caleb will know.”

“No. Caleb will see what I taught him to see.”

“You poisoned me.”

“I gave you a reason to disappear.”

“You’ll hurt the baby.”

Lorraine paused.

Then she said:

“There will be other grandchildren.”

The courtroom became silent.

Lorraine stared at the speakers.

Her own voice continued.

“When Caleb finds the doctor’s jacket, he’ll waste time asking questions. By the time he understands, you’ll be gone.”

The recording proved premeditation.

Not panic.

Not accident.

Not an impulsive attempt to frighten Hannah.

Lorraine knew the delay could kill her.

The jury convicted Lorraine of attempted murder, conspiracy, fraud, evidence tampering, and Thomas Rowan’s murder.

She received life in prison.

Martin received a reduced sentence for cooperation, but he would still spend the rest of his useful years behind bars.

At sentencing, Lorraine looked toward Caleb.

“You are still my son.”

Caleb stood.

“No.”

The courtroom shifted.

He continued:

“You gave birth to me. Thomas raised me. Hannah taught me what love looks like. You do not get to claim a role you used as a weapon.”

Lorraine’s face twisted.

“You’ll regret abandoning me.”

Caleb looked at Hannah.

Then at the photograph of Thomas he carried inside his jacket.

“I regret not leaving sooner.”

He walked out without looking back.

Outside the courthouse, reporters shouted questions.

Hannah took his hand.

They said nothing.

They did not owe the world their pain.

Their son waited at home.

And for the first time, Lorraine had no access to the house, the money, the phones, or the story.

👉 Justice ended Lorraine’s control, but Caleb and Hannah still had to decide what kind of family could grow from everything she tried to destroy.
