Chapter 5 - The Policy Change

Caleb’s father died when Caleb was nineteen.
Lorraine told everyone it was a heart attack.
Afterward, she controlled every account, every family property, and every decision Caleb made.
When Caleb married Hannah, Lorraine became colder.
When Hannah became pregnant, Lorraine became openly hostile.
“You are moving too quickly,” she told Caleb.
“We’ve been married four years.”
“She trapped you.”
“We planned this baby.”
Lorraine never accepted that answer.
Three weeks before Hannah’s emergency, Caleb met with a financial advisor.
He created a trust for his son.
Hannah became trustee if Caleb died.
Lorraine lost access to the townhouse, company shares, and family investments.
The advisor mailed a confirmation packet.
Caleb never received it.
Now Hannah remembered seeing that exact envelope in Lorraine’s handbag.
“She opened your mail,” Hannah said.
Caleb checked the townhouse security records.
The front-door camera had gone offline for forty-seven minutes the day the packet was delivered.
Lorraine had a spare key.
Caleb had given it to her years earlier.
He called the advisor.
“Did my mother contact your office?”
The advisor hesitated.
“She called yesterday. She claimed you wanted to restore her as secondary beneficiary.”
“I did not.”
“She knew your account verification answers.”
Of course she did.
Lorraine knew his first pet.
His childhood address.
His father’s middle name.
She had built his identity before he was old enough to protect it.
The advisor refused the change without Caleb’s signature.
Lorraine then asked what would happen if Hannah died before the child was born.
Caleb gripped the phone.
“What did you tell her?”
“That the prior beneficiary designation might temporarily apply until the trust was amended.”
The prior beneficiary was Lorraine.
There it was.
If Hannah and the baby died before delivery, Lorraine might regain control of millions.
Caleb contacted police.
Detective Mason Reed arrived at the hospital.
He listened without interruption.
Then he asked:
“Did your mother know the exact terms of the policy?”
“She knew enough.”
“Did she have access to your home?”
“Yes.”
“Did she ever have access to your wife’s medication?”
Caleb remembered the prenatal vitamins Lorraine brought three days earlier.
A sealed bottle.
A gift.
The hospital lab had not yet identified the substance in Hannah’s blood.

But Detective Reed already knew where to look.
👉 The vitamins Lorraine gave Hannah were still inside the townhouse—and one capsule had been carefully replaced.
