Chapter 2 - The Jacket on the Chair

The paramedics moved quickly.
One checked Hannah’s pulse.
The other placed an oxygen mask over her face and examined the blood beneath her.
“We need to move now.”
Caleb stayed beside her until they lifted her onto the stretcher.
Hannah caught his wrist.
“The baby?”
“We’re taking care of both of you,” the paramedic said.
Caleb wanted to believe him.
As they carried Hannah from the bedroom, Caleb looked back.
The room had been arranged to tell a story.
The open suitcase beside the bed.
Dr. Morgan’s dark jacket hanging over the chair.
The shattered wedding photograph.
Hannah’s phone positioned where Caleb would immediately see it.
And the photograph Lorraine had sent him thirty minutes earlier.
It showed Dr. Morgan entering the townhouse.
Lorraine’s text beneath it had read:
I didn’t want to tell you this way, but you deserve to know.
Caleb had been sitting in his car outside a bakery when he received it.
He called Hannah once.
No answer.
Then Lorraine called.
“She’s been planning to leave,” his mother said. “The suitcase proves it.”
“How do you know about a suitcase?”
A pause.
“Hannah told me.”
Caleb should have questioned that.
Instead, he drove around for twenty minutes, trying to control his anger before confronting his wife.
During those twenty minutes, Hannah called seventeen times.
His phone had been on silent.
Now, in the ambulance, Caleb looked at the call log.
One number appeared between Hannah’s calls.
Lorraine.
A five-minute conversation.
He did not remember answering it.
Then he saw the detail.
The call had been answered from another device linked to his account.
His old tablet.
The tablet kept in the kitchen drawer at home.
Someone inside the townhouse had used it to make it appear Caleb had spoken to Lorraine.
He called his mother.
She answered immediately.
“Caleb, are you all right?”
“How did you know Dr. Morgan was at my house?”
“I saw him.”
“From where?”
“I was driving past.”
“You live forty minutes away.”
Silence.
Then Lorraine said:
“Do not let Hannah confuse you.”
Caleb looked at his unconscious wife.
“What did you do?”
May you like
Lorraine ended the call.
👉 Caleb had blamed the doctor’s jacket on an affair—but Dr. Morgan had left it behind while trying to save Hannah from someone else.
