Chapter 3 - What Dr. Morgan Saw

At the hospital, Caleb waited outside the operating room.

A nurse took his statement.

Another collected Hannah’s phone.

Thirty minutes later, Dr. Ethan Morgan arrived wearing a hospital coat over a white shirt.

Caleb stood.

“Your jacket was in our bedroom.”

Dr. Morgan’s expression changed.

“You found her?”

“She’s in surgery.”

The doctor closed his eyes briefly.

“I should have called the police.”

“Why were you at my house?”

“Hannah contacted my office at eight this morning. She said she was cramping and dizzy.”

“Why didn’t she go to the hospital?”

“She said someone had taken her car keys.”

Caleb felt cold.

“Who?”

“She wouldn’t say over the phone.”

Dr. Morgan drove to the townhouse because Hannah’s symptoms sounded urgent.

When he arrived, Lorraine opened the door.

“She told me Hannah was sleeping,” he said.

“My mother was there?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I didn’t know she had hidden that from you.”

Dr. Morgan insisted on seeing Hannah.

Lorraine blocked the stairs.

Then they heard something fall upstairs.

Dr. Morgan pushed past her and found Hannah in the bedroom, weak but still standing.

She had already begun bleeding.

“I told Lorraine to call an ambulance while I examined Hannah.”

“Did she?”

“No.”

Instead, Lorraine said Caleb was on his way and refused to involve emergency services because “the family didn’t need a scandal.”

Dr. Morgan called from his own phone.

Lorraine knocked it from his hand.

During the struggle, he removed his jacket and pressed it beneath Hannah’s legs to support her.

Then Lorraine told him she had already called emergency services.

“She said they were downstairs,” he explained.

“They weren’t.”

“No.”

Dr. Morgan went to the front entrance to look for them.

The door locked behind him.

His phone and medical bag remained inside.

By the time he borrowed a neighbor’s phone, Lorraine had already moved his jacket into the bedroom chair and his bag beside the suitcase.

“She staged it,” Caleb whispered.

Dr. Morgan nodded.

“She wanted you to believe I was there for a different reason.”

A surgeon entered the hallway.

Caleb turned.

“Your wife is alive,” she said. “The baby is alive. But both are in critical condition.”

Relief nearly dropped him to the floor.

Then the surgeon added:

“We found something in Hannah’s blood that should not have been there.”

👉 Hannah’s bleeding had not begun naturally—someone had given her medication capable of triggering a medical emergency.
