Chapter 13 - The Seventeen Calls Between Them
Hannah returned home two months later.
The blood had been cleaned.
The broken photograph had been repaired.
The suitcase was gone.
But she could not enter the bedroom.
Caleb found her frozen in the doorway.
“We can move,” he said.
“This is our home.”
“We can still move.”
Hannah looked at him.
“Do you want to leave because I’m afraid, or because you are?”
He answered honestly.
“Both.”
They converted the room into a nursery and moved into the guest suite.
Not to erase what happened.
To stop forcing Hannah to sleep where she almost died.
Caleb began therapy.
So did Hannah.
Together and separately.
One evening, their counselor asked Caleb why he believed Lorraine’s photograph so quickly.
He wanted to say it looked convincing.
That Dr. Morgan’s jacket was there.
That the suitcase was open.
But the real answer was uglier.
“My mother taught me that love always contains betrayal,” he said.
“And Hannah paid for that belief.”
Hannah did not rescue him from the truth.
“Yes,” she said.
Caleb looked at her.
“I ignored seventeen calls.”
“You did.”
“I can never change that.”
“No.”
“What can I do?”
“Stop asking me to make your guilt smaller.”
He nodded.
Then Hannah continued.
“Be the man who answers the eighteenth call.”
That became the work.
Not grand apologies.
Small reliability.
Answering.
Listening.
Believing.
When Hannah said Lorraine’s attorney contacted her, Caleb did not demand details.
He asked what support she needed.
When she panicked at the sound of a phone vibrating, he stayed beside her without insisting she calm down.
When Thomas cried at night, Caleb woke first.
Months passed.
Trust returned slowly.
Not because Hannah forgot.
Because Caleb stopped asking her to.
During Lorraine’s trial, prosecutors played the fake confession audio.
Caleb heard the edited sentence that nearly cost Hannah her life.
Then they played the full hospital recording.
This baby isn’t ours anymore. She acts like he belongs to her.
The jury heard the difference.
So did Caleb.
The truth had always been available.
