Chapter 12 - Martin’s Confession
Martin stopped cooperating after the DNA results.
Then prosecutors showed him Thomas’s letter.
Thomas knew Martin was Caleb’s biological father.
He never exposed him.
He only demanded that Martin stop helping Lorraine manipulate the family finances.
Martin confessed.
He and Lorraine had an affair while Thomas traveled for work.
When Lorraine became pregnant, Thomas chose to raise Caleb as his own.
Years later, Lorraine told Martin that Thomas planned to take Caleb away and reveal everything.
It was a lie.
Thomas planned to leave Lorraine but preserve Caleb’s privacy.
Martin helped delay the ambulance after Thomas collapsed because Lorraine promised they would finally become a family.
Instead, she kept him hidden.
Useful.
Ashamed.
Controlled.
The same way she controlled everyone.
Martin admitted replacing Thomas’s medication.
Lorraine gave the pills.
He altered the medical file.
They expected a natural-looking cardiac death.
Fifteen years later, Lorraine used the same drug class on Hannah.
Martin helped because Lorraine threatened to expose his role in Thomas’s death.
The conspiracy was complete.
Lorraine and Martin were charged with Thomas’s murder.
Lorraine also faced attempted murder charges involving Hannah and her unborn child.
Hannah listened to the confession from her hospital room.
Caleb turned off the television before the reporters began discussing details.
“I don’t want our son growing up inside this story,” he said.
“He won’t,” Hannah answered. “But he should grow up knowing the truth.”
There was a difference.
Secrets gave Lorraine power.
Truth would prevent her from rebuilding it.
Their son remained in the NICU for five weeks.
They named him Thomas Ethan Rowan.
Thomas for the father who chose Caleb.
Ethan for the doctor who refused to leave Hannah unprotected.
When Caleb held his son for the first time, he cried without hiding it.
Hannah watched him.
“You came back,” she whispered.
He shook his head.
“I came too late.”
“But you stayed.”
Caleb looked at her.
Staying would not erase the seventeen missed calls.
