Chapter 9 - Lorraine Calls From the Road

Lorraine called Caleb from an unknown number.
He was sitting beside Hannah’s hospital bed.
Detective Reed recorded the conversation.
“Where are you?” Caleb asked.
“I needed space.”
“You poisoned my wife.”
“Hannah is dramatic.”
“She nearly died.”
“She has always been weak.”
Caleb’s hand tightened.
“Our son nearly died.”
For the first time, Lorraine hesitated.
Then she said:
“That child was going to take everything from you.”
“He is my son.”
“You don’t know that.”
“The recording was fake.”
Silence.
Caleb continued.
“Martin gave you the hospital audio.”
Lorraine’s breathing changed.
“He told you?”
“No. Your messages did.”
She began crying.
Not with remorse.
With frustration.
“I spent my entire life building your future.”
“You built a cage.”
“I protected you from your father.”
“He was trying to protect me from you.”
Lorraine’s voice became cold.
“You found the jacket.”
Caleb looked toward his father’s note on the table.
“Yes.”
“You don’t understand what he was planning.”
“He was leaving you.”
“He was stealing you.”
The sentence exposed the same belief that drove her hatred of Hannah.
Lorraine did not see Caleb as a son.
She saw him as property.
His father tried to leave.
Hannah became pregnant.
Both threatened her control.
Both suffered medical emergencies after changing financial documents.
“Where are you?” Caleb repeated.
Lorraine laughed softly.
“Ask Hannah what she promised me.”
Caleb looked at his wife.
Hannah’s face changed.
She remembered.
The night before the poisoning, Lorraine offered her a bargain.
Leave Caleb.
Give Lorraine temporary guardianship of the baby after birth.
In return, Lorraine would not expose “proof” that Caleb’s company had been built with stolen family money.
Hannah refused.
“What proof?” Caleb asked.
Hannah whispered:
“She said your company belongs to Martin.”
Police searched Martin’s office.
They found falsified loan documents showing Caleb owed him controlling interest.
Lorraine planned to destroy Caleb financially if Hannah survived.
Then Detective Reed traced the unknown call.
