Chapter 6 - The Capsule That Did Not Match
Police searched the townhouse that evening.
The bedroom remained exactly as Caleb had left it.
Blood on the hardwood.
The open suitcase.
The broken frame.
Dr. Morgan’s bag.
Lorraine’s staging.
In the bathroom cabinet, Detective Reed found Hannah’s prenatal vitamins.
All capsules were pale yellow.
Except one.
It was slightly darker.
The laboratory opened it.
Inside was a powdered medication used to increase bleeding risk.
Not normally fatal in a healthy adult.
Potentially catastrophic during late pregnancy.
Lorraine had not needed Hannah to die immediately.
She needed her weak.
Bleeding.
Unable to explain herself.
Then she needed Caleb to arrive angry enough to hesitate before calling for help.
The staged affair was not a side story.
It was the delay mechanism.
Detective Reed reconstructed the morning.
Lorraine drugged Hannah.
Opened the suitcase.
Placed Dr. Morgan’s photograph on the bed.
Used Caleb’s tablet to create a false call record.
Intercepted Hannah’s phone.
Sent Caleb photographs designed to trigger suspicion.
Locked Dr. Morgan outside.
Then left Hannah beneath the bed after she collapsed while trying to retrieve her phone.
“Why beneath the bed?” Caleb asked.
Reed showed him a photograph.
Hannah’s phone had slid underneath.
She crawled after it.
Lorraine kicked it farther away.
The blood pattern showed Hannah had remained there for at least twenty minutes.
Caleb closed his eyes.
His mother had watched his pregnant wife bleed while arranging the room.
Police attempted to locate Lorraine.
Her car was gone.
Her house was empty.
But her laptop remained.
Deleted search history revealed questions about pregnancy bleeding, emergency response times, inheritance law, and whether missed calls could be removed remotely.
One search was more disturbing.
HOW LONG CAN A PREGNANT WOMAN STAY CONSCIOUS AFTER SEVERE BLOOD LOSS?
Caleb stared at the screen.
“She planned every minute.”
Detective Reed nodded.
Then an officer found a deleted email draft.
It was addressed to Caleb.
The subject line read:
HANNAH’S CONFESSION.
Attached was an audio recording.
Hannah’s voice could be heard saying:
“The baby may not be yours.”
Caleb knew immediately it was fake.
Hannah had never said those words.

But the recording sounded real.
