Chapter 14 - The Edited Video
The video spread before breakfast.
It showed me forgetting Daniel’s name, dropping medication, and asking where my wife was—though Margaret had been dead for twenty years.
The clips were real.
The story was false.
They came from the first forty-eight hours after anesthesia, when I was heavily medicated. Claire removed every timestamp and every nurse explaining my condition.
Cable hosts questioned my fitness to manage a corporation. Bennett Holdings’ stock dropped eleven percent.
Daniel appeared outside the courthouse and said, “I love my father. I just want him safe.”
Watching him perform concern hurt more than the shoes.
Evelyn wanted silence until the hearing.
I disagreed.
We released the unedited hospital footage, complete medical records, and a statement from the surgical team confirming I had no cognitive impairment. Dr. Hale’s false notes were identified as under criminal review.
Then I addressed the camera myself.
“My age does not make me property,” I said. “My generosity does not make theft acceptable. And being a father does not require me to finance my son’s crimes.”
The full video changed public opinion within hours.
But Claire had one more weapon.
She produced a notarized letter supposedly written by Laura, asking Daniel to manage the twins’ money if anything happened to her.
Nolan recognized the handwriting immediately.
“That isn’t Mom’s,” he said.
Parker pointed to the signature.
“She never made the L like that.”
