Chapter 19 - Laura’s Condition

The independent account held enough money to cover the twins’ education and establish their adult lives.

But Laura placed one condition on access: if any dispute arose involving Daniel, he had to provide a sworn statement describing every financial request he made of her during the final five years of her life.

She expected conflict.

Maybe not this much, but enough.

Daniel sat across from Evelyn, me, and a federal prosecutor. His hands trembled around a paper cup.

“If I sign this, I go to prison.”

“If you lie,” Evelyn said, “you may go for longer.”

He looked at me. “Will you forgive me?”

“That is not part of the agreement.”

His face crumpled.

For six hours, Daniel described the failed investments, the loans, the pressure he put on Laura, and the first time he copied my signature. He admitted helping Claire obtain the corporate seal and estate papers. He denied knowing about the medication tampering or her plan to seize the twins.

The investigators believed parts of his statement because records supported them.

Then he revealed something none of us expected.

Claire had not chosen him randomly.

Years earlier, her father lost a company in a hostile acquisition led by Bennett Holdings. She grew up believing I destroyed her family.

“She said taking your company would balance the debt,” Daniel whispered.

I remembered the acquisition. Claire’s father had concealed liabilities and endangered hundreds of workers. We rescued the viable assets but refused to protect his fraudulent management.

Claire had built revenge around a lie told in her childhood.

Daniel signed the statement.

The twins’ account opened.

Then the prosecutor placed another document on the table.

👉 Daniel’s cooperation exposed the truth—but it also proved he had committed a crime against his own sister before she died.
