Chapter 21 - The Missing Witness
Melissa’s disappearance threatened the document fraud case.
Without her live testimony, Claire’s attorneys could challenge statements she made during negotiations. The forged papers still existed, but proving who ordered them became harder.
Claire’s smile spread across every news report.
Daniel accepted his plea agreement the next morning.
“I’ll testify,” he said. “Even if she destroys me.”
“You helped destroy yourself,” Evelyn replied.
He nodded. “I know.”
For the first time, he did not blame Claire.
Federal marshals found Melissa forty-eight hours later at a motel in Vermont. She had not fled willingly. A man connected to Vincent Cole had threatened her son and told her to disappear.
Cole was arrested for witness intimidation.
Melissa entered protective custody and completed her testimony on video.
She produced messages in which Claire ordered the false will, Laura’s forged letter, and the guardian forms. She also described Daniel delivering sample signatures.
The case strengthened overnight.
But the medication evidence remained uncertain. Claire’s attorney argued anyone in the townhouse could have altered the pills.
Then Rosa, the former housekeeper, remembered a kitchen camera installed after a burglary. Daniel believed it had stopped working years ago.
The system stored clips remotely.
Technicians recovered footage from the week before my collapse.
In one clip, Claire stood alone at the kitchen counter opening my medication organizer. She replaced several tablets, photographed the arrangement, and wiped the container clean.
The video had no sound.
It did not need any.
