Chapter 20 - The Crime Before the Accident
Three weeks before Laura’s fatal car accident, Daniel transferred $90,000 from a joint family account using an authorization she never signed.
He used the money to make an emergency payment to Vincent Cole.
Laura discovered the theft and scheduled a meeting with Evelyn. She intended to remove Daniel from every future financial role.
She died before the meeting.
The timing looked terrible.
Investigators reexamined the accident.
I could barely breathe when they said the words.
For two days, I believed I might learn my son had caused his sister’s death.
The original crash analysis showed Laura’s vehicle was struck by a drunk driver who crossed the median. Traffic cameras and toxicology records confirmed it. Daniel had no connection to the driver.
Relief came mixed with shame that I had considered the possibility.
Daniel cried when told he was cleared of involvement in the accident.
“I loved her,” he said.
“You stole from her.”
“I know.”
Love without integrity had become Daniel’s excuse for everything.
The prosecutor offered him a plea agreement: substantial prison time, full restitution, testimony against Claire and the document fraud ring, and permanent disqualification from serving as trustee or corporate officer.
He asked for one night to decide.
Meanwhile, Claire refused every offer. She insisted she was the true victim and demanded a jury trial.
Her attorney announced she would argue that Daniel manipulated her and that I staged the financial crisis to punish an outspoken daughter-in-law.
Then Melissa Pierce disappeared before giving formal testimony.
Her apartment was empty.
