Chapter 5 - The Conservatorship Plan

The petition described me as forgetful, unstable, and vulnerable to manipulation.

It claimed I wandered the townhouse at night, misplaced medication, and made irrational financial decisions. Daniel was listed as the loving son seeking only to protect me.

Every accusation was false.

But several pages included statements from people I knew: a private nurse, a housekeeper, and my own physician’s office.

“How did they get these?” I asked.

Evelyn examined the signatures. “Some may be real. The context may not be.”

I remembered Claire insisting on attending my medical appointments. She asked questions about my recovery, repeated small details, and once photographed my medication list “for emergencies.”

She had been building a case.

Daniel called again, his tone suddenly gentle.

“Dad, we’re worried about you.”

“You were not worried this morning.”

“Claire shouldn’t have dropped the shoes. She admits that.”

“Does she?”

A pause.

“We think the stress of managing everything is affecting you.”

There it was.

I felt grief rise behind my ribs, heavier than rage. My son was not being manipulated from a distance. He was participating.

“Come to the house tomorrow,” he said. “We can settle this privately.”

Evelyn shook her head.

I answered, “I’ll send someone.”

After the call, Marcus entered with a new discovery. The conservatorship filing fee had been paid from Red Harbor Ventures.

Claire had funded the attempt to control me using money stolen from the twins.

Then Evelyn’s assistant rushed in holding a courier envelope.
