Chapter 9 - The Locked Study

Boston police reached the townhouse before we did.
Daniel stood in the hallway while an officer examined the damaged lock on my study door. Claire sat on the staircase, barefoot, her muddy heels gone.
“This is my home,” Daniel insisted.
The officer looked at the deed Evelyn provided. “It belongs to the Bennett Family Trust.”
Daniel turned toward me as I entered.
“You called the police on your own son?”
“I called them on someone breaking into my locked office.”
Inside, drawers had been emptied across the floor. The archive cabinet stood open.
The original trust instrument was missing.
Daniel denied touching it.
Claire blamed the housekeeper.
Then Nolan and Parker appeared at the front door with their school counselor. They had received a message from Daniel telling them I had suffered a mental breakdown and needed their support.
Nolan looked from the police officers to the broken lock.
“Grandpa, what happened?”
I wanted to protect them from the truth. That instinct had guided me for years.
But protection built on silence had helped Daniel deceive them.
“Money your mother left for you was taken,” I said. “I’m trying to get it back.”
Parker stared at Daniel. “You said Mom didn’t leave us anything.”
The room went still.
Daniel’s face changed.
I had never known he told them that.

Then one officer called from the kitchen. He had found ashes in the fireplace and a partially burned blue cover stamped with the trust’s seal.
👉 Daniel had tried to burn the trust document, but a hidden backup existed somewhere he never knew about.
