Chapter 6 - The Boardroom Ambush

Bennett Holdings occupied the top three floors of a glass tower overlooking Boston Harbor.

I founded it with one borrowed desk, two clients, and a promise to Laura and Daniel that they would never know the fear of unpaid bills. Forty-five years later, Daniel sat in the boardroom wearing the expression of a man already crowned.

I attended by video from Evelyn’s office.

Claire sat behind him in her red dress, though she held no board position.

Daniel cleared his throat. “Due to concerns about my father’s capacity, I move that his executive authority be suspended.”

Three directors avoided the camera. Two looked genuinely shocked.

Then Evelyn entered the meeting under her own name as trust counsel.

“Before anyone votes,” she said, “you should know Mr. Bennett’s voting shares are held by the family trust, and Daniel Bennett’s proxy authority was revoked at 9:00 a.m.”

Daniel’s face tightened.

“That’s not valid.”

“It is,” Evelyn replied. “And because your attempted motion relies on a medical petition containing potentially fraudulent evidence, we are referring it to outside counsel.”

Claire leaned toward him and whispered too loudly, “End the call.”

I spoke for the first time.

“Daniel, where is the original corporate seal?”

He blinked.

The seal had been kept in a locked cabinet in my study. It was required for certain trust certifications and ownership changes.

He claimed he had never seen it.

Marcus sent me a photograph taken from Claire’s social media six months earlier. In the background of a party picture, the brass seal sat on Daniel’s desk.

I held the image up to the camera.

“Then explain this.”
