Chapter 17 - The Miami Condo

Federal agents entered the Miami condo before dawn.

Claire was not there.

Vincent Cole was.

He claimed he had come to collect property securing Daniel’s debt. The condo contained suitcases, cash, forged passports, and jewelry purchased with trust funds.

Inside a wall safe, agents found the red folder.

It held the foundation beneficiary list, copies of my identification, Daniel’s debt records, and a handwritten plan titled “Phase Two.”

Phase One was the conservatorship.

Phase Two began after my death.

The plan described selling the townhouse, liquidating company shares, and transferring charitable reserves offshore. Beside one line—“accelerate timeline if necessary”—Claire had written the name of my heart medication.

Evelyn read it without expression, then closed the file.

No one spoke.

I thought of Claire organizing my pills after surgery. I remembered two mornings when the tablets looked different and she blamed the pharmacy.

Tests on medication recovered from the townhouse showed several pills contained a higher dose than prescribed.

Not enough to prove she intended to kill me.

Enough to prove someone had tampered with them.

Daniel was shown the plan.

He began shaking.

“I never agreed to that.”

“Did you know she changed his medication?” an investigator asked.

“No.”

“Did you help her obtain it?”

Daniel covered his face.

“I gave her the prescription list.”

He had opened the door without asking where it led.

Then agents received an airport alert.

Claire had not flown to Miami.

She had boarded a train north under a false name.

Her destination was the twins’ school.

👉 Claire had lost the money, the house, and Daniel—so she was heading toward the two people I loved most.
