Chapter 8 - The Rewritten Will
The false will looked convincing.
It used the same paper as my attorney’s office, copied my initials, and carried two witness signatures. It removed Nolan and Parker entirely. It gave Daniel control of Bennett Holdings, the townhouse, the investment portfolio, and every trust reserve.
Claire received the Beacon Hill property if Daniel predeceased her.
Evelyn read the document twice before speaking.
“This is not amateur work.”
One witness was my former housekeeper, Rosa Delgado. The other was Dr. Stephen Hale, the physician who supervised my cardiac rehabilitation.
Rosa answered Evelyn’s call immediately.
She began crying before we asked a question.
“Mrs. Bennett told me it was a routine acknowledgment,” she said.
“Mrs. Bennett?” I asked.
“Claire. She said everyone already called her that.”
Rosa admitted Claire placed a folded page over the signature section, hiding the title of the document. She had been paid $2,000 afterward as a “holiday bonus.”
Dr. Hale’s office claimed he was traveling.
Marcus discovered he had received $75,000 from Red Harbor Ventures.
I thought of every appointment where Hale had spoken to me slowly, watching for hesitation. He was not evaluating my recovery. He was collecting moments that could be twisted into incapacity.
Evelyn contacted the district attorney’s financial crimes unit.
Before she finished the call, an alarm appeared on her screen.
Someone had attempted to access the original trust archive from the townhouse.
Only two people knew the cabinet code.
Daniel was one.
